Do you have any aspiration of getting into design school? If you do, then you’ve probably asked yourself this question, how can I successfully apply?
Well, many people will tell you that it’s a challenging task since top art schools only accept a very small percentage of applicants. However, you need to know that there is no guaranteed magic formula involved.
All you need to know is an understanding of how to produce a great portfolio. Here are five must-know tips on how to get into art school.
Carry out Extensive Research
Your first step towards successful application to a design school begins with carrying out some research. You need to dig a little deeper by surfing the internet to help you decide on the art college that is best for you.
While doing research, consider looking into school directories, reviews, ranking information, among other factors.
Apply to More Than One Design School
Once you settle on specific art or design schools that match your criteria, the next step is to create a list of schools that you would be prepared to attend and then find their criteria for admissions.
It's a fact that we are not always bound to get an acceptance letter from our preferred schools. Therefore, it's advisable that you consider applying to a number of different schools. This way, you will not be left with no place to go in case you are not accepted into your first choice.
You can consider starting with the top ten preferable schools, then, narrow down to the top three schools.
In most cases, the top three will have a very rigorous and selective process. Never be discouraged from sending your applications to such schools. Take your time and go through the art school requirements for admission before you submit your application.
Create a Portfolio
After you have collected all the requirements for your specific degrees of interest, the next thing to do is look for examples of a portfolio. Good portfolio examples can be found in campus libraries. However, if you cannot access the libraries, consider searching them online.
Having gone through existing portfolio examples, you can now start preparing your portfolio. Remember to tweak your portfolio from school to school to ensure they match the requirements.
Another important tip most people do forget when making their portfolio is highlighting their goals and skills to match each institution’s design requirements.
Prepare for Interviews
Now that you have dealt with the application process, the next step is to prepare for interviews. This shouldn’t scare you, though, as some art colleges do not interview applicants.
However, if a school you do end up in require an interview as part of the admission process, you don’t have to worry. All you need is a rehearsal on how you can confidently talk about yourself and your work in front of the admissions committee.
Wrapping It Up
The most important thing to remember when applying to a design school is that your portfolio is a vital part of the application. Note that an incomplete portfolio could jeopardize the entire application.
